The purpose of a speech contest is to provide an opportunity for students to improve their speaking abilities and area of communication.

LOCATION: Mt. Pleasant High School (1750 S White Rd, San Jose, CA 95127)

WHEN: Saturday, November 9th

The speech contest occurs in two rounds

Round 1 (ALL CONTESTANTS): 8am - 9:45am, Check-In will begin at 7:30am!

Round 2 (Final 3-5 Contestants): 2pm - 3pm


** ELIMINATION ROUND: All participants will perform; top 3-5 earn their place in the final round.

** FINAL ROUND: Top 3-5 perform on the main event stage at the Culture Show Competition.


MAYS SPEECH PROMPTS:


Each prompt acts as a guideline, please feel free to be broad or as specific as you like. Email DanAndJohnson@gmail.com if you have any questions.


1) Topic: Community & Culture
Immigration & Citizenship can be filled with both diversity and adversity, with the 2020 Census coming up, explain how the Vietnamese community/cultural is affected by this. What do you think being Vietnamese-American means? Growing up did any of this correlate with you and how do you approach community and culture now?


2) TOPIC: Social Impact
What/Who inspires you and why? Is this inspiration due to issues faced in our society or something you’re simply passionate about? If applicable, what kind of work or plans do you have to leave an impact in this world?


3) TOPIC: Cultural Appreciation
Why did you join VSA/VSU and what do you expect to get out of MAYS? Touch upon what was your first impression and what made you come out and participate. Is there something you wish existed or something you appreciate regarding Vietnamese culture?



NOTE: Each speech must last a minimum of 3 and not go over 5 minutes. 5 points will be added to all speeches that stay within the time limit.


** Monetary awards will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. The exact amounts of cash prizes will be announced on the day of the event. Cash Prizes to award winners will be distributed after the show. You will need to fill out the Claiming Cash Prize Form and submit to the registration desk on the day of the event.**
